The Aarson apparatus to demonstrate the force on a conductor in a magnetic field consists of a strong U-shaped magnet and a pair of brass rails with 4mm socket terminals. Additionally, it includes a brass axle with plastic discs that is free to roll along the rails and completes the electrical contact between them.
In the experiment, the brass axle is placed on the brass rails between the poles of the magnet. When a power supply unit is connected to the terminals, an electric current flows through the axle and the rails. This creates a magnetic field around the axle.
Due to the interaction between the magnetic field produced by the electric current and the magnetic field of the U-shaped magnet, a force is exerted on the axle. This force causes the axle to roll along the rails, away from the center of the magnetic field.
By observing the movement of the axle, students can understand and visualize the concept of the force experienced by a conductor carrying an electric current in a magnetic field, as described by the principles of electromagnetic induction. This experiment serves as a practical demonstration of fundamental concepts in electromagnetism within the physics laboratory setting.
